There are no crosstown avenues to fight through and no bridge in the way, and at the far end there is a lot with space for your car while the urethane sets. Drivers who commute toward Jamaica, JFK or Brooklyn are passing our exit already, so the detour costs a few blocks rather than an afternoon.

The Van Wyck is one of the busiest truck routes in Queens and it feeds the airport, so anything loose in the lanes gets thrown at speed. Flushing drivers who use it daily collect chips faster than people who stay on surface streets. Downtown adds a different hazard: delivery vans double-parked on Main Street and Union Street mean constant squeezing past open doors and stacked pallets, and side glass takes the hit. Construction is more or less permanent around the College Point Boulevard corridor, and steel plates and gravel come with it. Take the Van Wyck Expressway south. From downtown Flushing you can reach it through Main Street or College Point Boulevard, and from there it is a continuous run past the park, Kew Gardens and Jamaica to the Atlantic Avenue exit, then a mile west to 114th Street. Traffic near the Kew Gardens interchange is the only part that reliably slows down. Surface alternatives exist through Kissena Boulevard and Parsons Boulevard, but they are slower with more lights.
